Adam Bede
Illustrated by Brock, Charles E., Hopkins, Arthur, Thomson, Hugh
Adam Bede is a pious man, in love, to his detriment, with the flighty Hetty Sorrel. When Hetty is seduced by another man, she must hide her sin from Adam, to whom she is now betrothed. The tale's development from here depicts each character's struggles for happiness in life and in marriage.
