A Little Maid of Old Philadelphia
Illustrated by Cooke, Edna
Ruth Pennell and Winifred Merrill live in Philadelphia in 1778, while the city is in the hands of General Howe and the British army. Ruth's father is with Washington at Valley Forge, and the little girls are ardent supporters of the American cause and admirers of the gallant young Frenchman, the Marquis de Lafayette. Though eager for the war to end successfully, Ruth and her friends are also fond of dolls and pets, games and little plays. Nevertheless, they keep their ears open, and when Ruth overhears two British soldiers she knows just what to do.
